Green Tomato Relish

Good way to use green tomatoes. Grandma Kate got this recipe from her neighbor and friend, Vera Beckstead on October 16, 1944.


4 quarts green tomatoes when chopped

6 large onions, chopped

1-quart vinegar

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

1-quart sugar

1 red or green pepper

1 tsp. cloves


Stew together for 1½ hour. Then mix with a little juice: 1 T. flour, 1 tsp. mustard, and 1/2 tsp. turmeric. Stir this into relish and boil 5 minutes. Seal while hot.

Process jars for 45 minutes in hot water bath canner.
